Tribute to President Gordon B. Hinckley

It’s been a week of emotions for me after I heard about the passing of President Gordon B. Hinckley (president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). I am saddened to hear about his death, but am also gladdened to know that he will be able join his dear wife Marjorie (who passed away 3 years ago). Pres. Hinckley was an amazing man that was loved by millions across the globe. I enjoyed watching the tribute given by famous talk-show host Glenn Beck — if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it (video below). Following the example of Glenn Beck and many others, I’d like to point out a few of the ways that President Hinckley touched my life:

  • President Hinckley was an optimist. He always saw the cup “half-full” and his happy, optimistic attitude spread like wildflower to everyone that came in contact with him. Here is a quote from Pres. Hinckley that I truly enjoy (it’s been up on our fridge for about 3 months now): “It isn’t as bad as you sometimes think it is. ‘It all works out. Don’t worry.’ I say that to myself every morning. It will all work out. If you do your best, it will all work out. Put your trust in God and move forward with faith and confidence in the future. The Lord will not forsake us, if we will put our trust in Him, if we will pray to Him, if we will live worth of His blessings, He will hear our prayers.”
  • President Hinckley was a motivated and great leader — a man with tons of energy (even at the age of 97). He was the most travelled man of any previous prophet, frequently travelling around the globe to be with the people.
  • He was an outgoing man, loved by many, liked by all. Even the sometimes-known-as-callous Mike Wallace (60 Minutes) appreciated and befriended President Hinckley. From presidents of countries, leaders of religious organizations, and CEOs of large companies to the poorest of people of the world thought of him as a friend.

I could go on all day about Gordon B. Hinckley. I hope that I can follow his example. He has inspired me to be better, to do more, and to Stand for Something. No matter what religion, belief system, or values you have; you would love to learn about the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley.

Like McCain, I Endorse Mitt Romney

I guess that it’s about time for me to start showing my public support for the man that, I believe, should lead the United States as our next President. After studying the issues that our country currently faces, I strongly believe that Mitt Romney is the right person to be in Washington. Here are a few of the reasons why I support him:

  • The Economy: When all is said and done, the most important problem/issue that faces our country is the declining economy. Beyond the war in Iraq (foreign policy), the challenges of health care, and the control of immigration — the economic strength of our nation is what will allow us to keep a strong military and remain the world power. As of today, we are faced with a 9 trillion dollar national debt, a growing trade deficit, a weakening dollar, a declining housing market, and nearly 45 trillion dollars in obligated debts that will be due over the next several decades. In addition, the competition throughout the world (China, India, etc.) is heating up. If we don’t have the right man in position to lead us through these challenges, it could be disastrous. There is no other man more qualified and more proven to lead our nation through these struggles than Mitt Romney.
  • Proven Leader: Mitt Romney has proven over and over again as a successful business man, as President of the 2002 Olympics, and as Governor of Massachusetts (private, public, and political experience) that he is a leader. Because he hasn’t spent his life as a politician, he knows the challenges of the “real world.” He has successfully led businesses (large and small), organizations, and state governments; while most of the other candidates have hardly led their subcommittees. He understands how to manage people and how to manage a budget. He is fiscally responsible — something that is hard to say about most politicians. Also, I don’t believe that you have had to serve in the military to be a great military leader (we’ve seen it over and over in history)… but I do believe that being a great leader will lead to a great military leader.
  • Tax Plan: It’s frustrating to think about those that believe that the solution to any government deficit is to increase taxes. It’s inspiring to hear how Mitt was able to turn the Massachusetts’s deficit around without raising any taxes (just as he said he would). Mitt’s plan is to keep the tax burden low — a solution that speaks to all of us.
  • Strong Economy, Strong Military, Strong Families (Romney’s Platform): I, too, believe that the success of our nation lies in the amazing citizens that we have here in the United States. We believe in freedoms and we believe in values. I believe that families are the core unit of society and, as a result, we should place emphasis on the strength of families.

There are other reasons (including his stance on health care, the war in Iraq, and immigration), but I won’t go into a lot of detail.

Now, you are probably asking, “what does McCain have to do with all of this?” Well, one of my business partners found an interesting video that shows McCain endorsing Mitt Romney after Romney won the Governor’s race in Mass. If you haven’t seen it, I recommend checking it out. It is a great endorsement and quite ironic considering the heated debates that have happened as of late.

The whole McCain topic is a whole other story, but I’ll refrain from going into detail. Let’s just say that I don’t put a lot of trust or faith into him and would be very worried about our economy if he were in the White House. He does a great job in the senate! ;)

Anyway, I’ve contributed my financial support to Mitt Romney and I urge you, after really looking at the issues that face America, to do the same.

Blackberry + Google = Cool Apps

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been discovering a lot of the latest Google apps for my Blackberry.  Over the break, my brother showed me the new Google maps, which led to the exploration and adoption of several new apps that I’m stoked about.  Here are a few (all of which are on my Blackberry):

  1. Google maps:  The new map application acts almost like a GPS.  It can automatically detect where I am (within 1700 meters) which makes it easy to search directions on the fly.  They are also starting to show the flow of traffic on the map feature.  It was a huge step forward from the previous map feature that I had been using.
  2. Google Calendar + Google Sync:  I’ve been a long-time Outlook calendar user.  I didn’t ever think that I would switch from Outlook because it was the only program that would sync with my Blackberry.  The problem with Outlook is that it was almost impossible to share my calendar with anyone.  I’ve recently switched to Google Calendar because the Google Sync app on my phone automatically syncs and updates my Blackberry calendar from the internet.  Now, I can share my calendar with my wife so that she can see what I’m doing and easily add family events.
  3. Others:  Besides the two mentioned above, I have downloaded Picasa, Google docs, Google Reader, Google Talk, and Gmail to my Blackberry.  Since we are always using those applications at FundingUniverse, it makes it incredibly efficient to have them on the fly.

I just realized that I have made 2 blog entries about Google in the last month.  They must be doing something right.

Entrepreneurship & Family: Putting $ into the Business

My wife sure loves me a lot.  She must because she has invested a lot of money in me over the past couple of years.

One of the ways that entrepreneurial dreams affect the family is that a lot of the money that you have in savings will usually go towards the business.  A wife will usually sacrifice their thirst for shopping, their comfort of a savings account, and their desire to get their own home so that your company can be successful.  At least that has happened in our household.

So far, we’ve…

  • Pulled money (not hundreds, but thousands) out of what used to be called our “savings account”
  • Taken gifts and loans from close friends & family (thank you, thank you, thank you)
  • Used money that we had received for student loans (not sure if I really should admit that)
  • Pushed off buying a home (my parents were on an LDS mission for 18 months — so they asked us to take care of their home).  Even though I was making a 1 hr + commute, it was worth it for the FREE rent.
  • Taken reduced salary — 1/2 of my “salary” was going to pay back loans each month

There is more… but you get the idea.

I’ll be making this point alot… but usually the spouse of the entrepreneur is the one that is making most of the sacrifices.  I honestly love what I do.  I have confidence that our team can build a successful company and that the sacrifices will be worth it in the end.

My wife, on the other hand, can only stand on the sidelines and hope that we are successful.  She usually only sees/hears about the “high highs and the low lows.”  Some days, she must be thinking, “what is Brock getting himself in to?!” because she sees me worry about the company and our employees and she knows that I’ve chosen this path over others.

Most of us entrepreneurs call this “skin in the game” — while the rest of the world calls it insanity.  Despite it all, I love what I do.  I wouldn’t trade it for the world… and I’m in deed grateful to my wife for her patience and encouragement…. and MONEY!  :)

Entrepreneurs:  if you are planning to become an entrepreneur… make sure that you have a supportive spouse.

Is your blog controversial?

It cracks me up to read some of the blogs (both here locally and nationally) that try so hard to be controversial.  Most of these bloggers are so interested in getting readers, pageviews, and comments that they’ll make ridiculous entries/statements that will stir the pot in the community.

This type of blogger will look for anything and everything to criticize because they know that it will attract readers to their blog.  I’m not saying that it’s wrong to be critical in your blog.  In fact, I should probably be a little more candid in my entries, but I guess that my motivations for blogging are different from their motivations.  What I’m saying is that it gets a little old to read a blog that is always cynical and tries so hard to be controversial.

I’m 100% positive that a lot of those same people believe that my blog is boring.  I hardly write about controversial topics.  In fact, I love to write about good news, learning experiences, and topics on entrepreneurship.

This entry brings up a good question — why do you write/read blog entries?

“Spoon Me”

My wife and I went to the friends and family “grand opening” of the new refreshing and healthy frozen yogurt store name Spoon Me. The store was started by 2 very good friends from my hometown.

The yogurt is different from any other frozen dessert because it is a “healthy” frozen yogurt. The serving boasts only 80 calories per serving and is very light compared to traditional ice cream. I added fresh raspberries and peaches as toppings — and I was very impressed!

It’s amazing how quickly the “Spoon Me” word has spread. This is the first franchise to open, but they have already generated a TON of interest from others that would like to get in as franchise owners. It will be fun to see what comes of it.

This brings up an interesting topic for conversation. Traditionally, professional investors prefer not to invest in restaurants because they don’t scale enough to produce the type of returns that investors are looking for. One way to solve that problem is to create a franchise model and try to scale it quickly.

Anyway, if you are in Salt Lake City, you’ll definitely need to go check it out!

UPDATE: Pictures Below…

Here is “Mr. Spoon Me” himself dishing up their new healthy frozen yogurt.

The Evolution of the Spoon.

I had to make this picture a little bit bigger so that you could see some of the sayings that they have written in their bathrooms.  Quite catchy.

It’s who is behind the CEO that counts…

Chris Knudsen wrote a blog entry about a year ago about the difficulty of being a CEO. While I don’t argue that being a CEO is difficult, it’s the “specialists” and the “monday morning QBs” (as he puts it) that really allow the company to grow and be successful (Chris: I still love ya :)). Here are a few of the people in my life that work their tails off to make FundingUniverse (and me as the CEO) look good:

1. My wife: I don’t want to get too personal here (because I could go on all day about her), but my wife is truly amazing. Her support, encouragement, patience, and love is what motivates me and keeps me going.

2. My partners: Trent, Jeff, Briana, and Josh are incredibly talented. They have made a ton of sacrifices to make FundingUniverse into the company that it is today.

3. The team: when it comes down to it, you always need people on the ground (specialists) that are making things happen. We’ve got fantastic employees, partners, contractors, and advisors that know how to execute.

Sometimes the CEO will have a lot of people telling them how great they are and they soon begin to believe it. They forget that there are a whole lot of people at their side that are making things happen and ultimately results in them (as the leader) getting recognition.

Mitt Romney’s National Call Day

I have to tell you that I’m not that into politics. Should I be? Yes. Do I wish that I was? Yes. In fact, I’m going to have that be a small goal of mine this year — pay more attention to what’s happening with our local and national government officials.

I guess that this week will be a good first step. If you didn’t know, Mitt Romney announced on Monday the formation of the “Romney for President Exploratory Committee” (which basically means that he has officially filed his papers with the Federal Election Commission to run for the President of the United States). I received about 6 emails on Monday from various people asking for my support through a financial donation (each person can donate up to $2100 or $4200 per couple) — I even had an email (via a friend) come from Mitt’s son Craig.

Here is what the email from Criag Romney said:

As you may know, my dad filed papers to form an exploratory committee earlier today to test the waters to run for President in 2008.

One of the keys to be able to do this is to raise a significant amount of money over the next 12 months. Candidates will need to raise about $100 million over that period to be considered serious contenders for the Presidency. The first few weeks after announcing the formation of an exploratory committee are critical in that they demonstrate the candidates ability to raise this kind of money.

As a result, I am asking you to help me raise money for my dad’s exploratory committee. On January 8th, he will be hold a National Call Day in Boston during which time many of his supporters will gather to call friends and family to request them to make donations to the committee.

Please let me know if you have any questions and feel free to take a look at my dad’s positions at www.thecommonwealthpac.com.

From the sounds of it, it appears that Mitt is already well on his way to raising the $100 million necessary. Here is an excerpt from an email that I received Monday night:

As you may have heard through the many news reports, we had a very successful day today in Boston! Governor Romney and the national finance team conducted a National Call Day, raising in excess of $6.5 million towards the Romney for President Exploratory Committee. A record day which illustrates and validates the depth of the grass roots effort that has begun in support of Mitt and Ann Romney and their presidential aspirations. It was an amazing thing to witness the success of the day through so many contributions from so many people, especially recognizing that no one contribution could exceed $2,100. Never before has any presidential aspirant raised so much in so little time. Governor Romney has established his leadership through past successes, and further evidences his position as a top tier candidate for the Presidency of the United States by his positions on issues before us, his personal character and integrity, and in his capacity to garner substantial grass roots support.

I am intentionally excluding personal opinions regarding Mitt and the 2008 election until I have formalized a more concrete opinion. Early on, I do like Mitt and have been impressed with his successes as Governor of Massachusetts and President of the Salt Lake Olympic Committee.

Blog Tag - 5 Things You Don’t Know About Me

Yes, I’ve been “tagged” by Michael Eager and Chris Sandberg to write the post 5 Things You Don’t Know About Me. To be honest with you, I don’t really like these pass along games. In fact, I can’t stand it when I get emails that try to make you feel guilty if you don’t pass them along. They’ll say something like “you better pass this email along or you will _______” or “if you pass this email along, you’ll earn $1M from Bill Gates” — I’m sure that you know what I’m talking about.

Anyway, for the sake of not being a poor sport, I will participate in the blog tag. That being said, I will not feel bad if the bloggers that I tag do not participate.

Here are the 5 things that you probably didn’t know about me:

  1. I ripped my front tooth out when I was eight years old: I was playing “dunk ball” on a lowered basketball hoopbrhead-small.jpg in my back yard and as I went up for a Michael-Jordan-like-dunk, my front tooth hooked the net and ripped out! (I can picture what you are doing right now… holding your mouth and saying aaaawwwwwoooooo!)
  2. I played Semi-Pro Soccer: The BYU Men’s Soccer team purchased a semi-pro franchise and is now competing in the Premier Development League. I started out my career as a forward and finished it off as a center-midfielder.
  3. I’m married with 1 boy and a little girl on the way: One of the most exciting news in 2006 — my wife and I are expecting #2!
  4. Lived 2 years in Uruguay: Served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was 2 of the most amazing years of my life. I love the people and miss them dearly.
  5. Never Seen The Wizard of Oz: To me, that’s not really that big of deal; but to everyone else, it has been shocking. I never saw the movie and never really had the desire. I suppose that I will see it one day with my children, but if don’t, oh well.

You’ve got to be kidding me…

Did you see that game last night? Boise St. played Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and it was incredible! Boise St., a huge underdog & BCS buster, beat Oklahoma 43-42 in OT to win the game. BSU’s coach had a lot of guts to call some of the plays that he called.

Check out the highlights here (not great quality… but it does the job).

UPDATE:  After all of the buzz throughout the day today, I felt like I need to add a few more comments to this post.  One of my partners today mentioned that if last night’s game was put into a movie (kind of like Remember the Titans or Invincible), it would be one of those dumb unrealistic movies.  I mean…think about what happened:

  • Underdogs go up by a lot
  • “Bad guys” come back to tie after three tries to convert a 2-point conversion (only 1:30 to go in the game)
  • Next play, the underdog throws an interception and the “bad guys” run it back for a TD — it looks like there is no hope for the underdogs to win
  • Underdogs drive the length of field in :45 seconds by using the old-fashioned “hook-and-ladder” play (not to mention that it was run to perfection)
  • Game goes into OT
  • The stage is set again… “bad guys” score on the first play in OT when their star running back takes it in the end zone
  • Underdogs use every trick play in the book to convert on 4th down and score a TD
  • Coach decides to go for 2 to win the game
  • Last play of the game ends on a trick “Statue-of-liberty” play where the underdogs win the game
  • And finally… after the game, the star player for the underdogs proposes to the head cheerleader!

Too good to be true!

The Greatest Game I’ve ever seen…

Ok, so I don’t post too many entries on topics that aren’t related to entrepreneurship — but this time, I just can’t resist! I am one of the biggest BYU Football fans the world has ever seen. No matter what is happening or where I am in the world, I do not miss a game (when my wife and I were in Germany, we stayed up in the middle of the night to watch the BYU/UNLV game on the internet).

Anyway, for those of you who don’t know, BYU’s biggest rival is the red “team up north” (the University of Utah). Over the past couple of years, it has pained me to know that BYU has not beaten the Utes since 2001. This year, however, it was a different story…

With 1:19 left in the 4th quarter, BYU got the ball down by 4 points. The game was played in front of a hostile environment at Rice Eccles Stadium, so no one gave them hope. They drove the down the field to have the ball at the Utes 11 yard line with 3.2 seconds left. 1 play left to either win or lose the game. Check out what happened (it’s well worth your time to watch — you’ll be inspired and motivated for the rest of your week :) )

The Cougs are back! MWC Champs!

Back in the Game

So don’t you hate when you get onto somebody’s blog and the entry says: “Sorry that I have written for a while. I’ve been so busy, but I’m committing to do better!”? It’s even worse when you see that like 4 or 5 times throughout their blog.

Since I know you don’t like that, I won’t do it. ;)

It’s been a crazy month of October. Here are the highlights:

  • Successful SpeedPitching Luncheons in the Bay Area and in Houston. Most of the major angel groups were in attendance (Sandhill Angels, The Angels Forum, Houston Angels, Keiretsu Forum, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Amidzad Ventures, Siemens Technology Ventures, US Angels, etc.) and we had 18 fantastic companies that presented.
  • My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful vacation to Europe — what an amazingly gorgeous place! See some of the highlights by clicking here
  • I had the opportunity to participate in a speaking panel at the first-ever University Start-Ups Conference in Washington D.C.
  • The team at FundingUniverse worked tirelessly to launch the new FundingUniverse subscription. Check out our new diggs (I’ll blog more about this in a different entry).

College Dropout

Ok, I’m going to come clean: I am a college drop-out!

But, on the other hand…aren’t you?

Don’t get me wrong, I loved my college days; probably some of the best times in my life. But, as soon as I caught the entrepreneurial bug, school was the last thing on my mind! I’m not down-playing the importance of going to college and getting a degree (Most of the education that is taught is very valuable). But at the same time, entrepreneurship is AMAZING!

One of the things that I like most about entrepreneurship is the opportunity to learn. If you can’t tell by the title of my blog, learning is a very important part of my life and career. Honestly, I think that I dedicate about an hour each day to formal learning and then enjoy the informal learning that occurs throughout the rest of the projects and experiences that I am having. My job is fulfilling. I love to go to work each day because of the challenges that I face.

(I’m getting off topic…back to school). Even though I got the entrepreneurial bug, it is important to me that I graduate from college. As a result, I have been spending the last 1.5 years working on independent study and night classes. To be honest, I can’t stand it (I would rather be spending time with family, working, playing, blogging, or even sleeping!) but for the sake of finishing that which I started — I will finish.

Brock GraduationAll of this brings me to: I finally walked a couple of weeks ago! All of my projects and course work is complete with one final left to go. I’m glad that it’s coming to an end and am grateful for my wife’s motivation to help me finish.

Are there any others out there that wish to come clean? If so, I’d like to hear your story! :)

Mom Entrepreneurs

Have you kept up on the recent rise in Mom entrepreneurs? I think that it is an awesome new trend. Let me elaborate:

Over the past few months, my wife has become quite the entrepreneur. It all started when she was on the hunt for one of those “cute diaper bags” from Nordstrom. Of course, when we found out the the “cute diaper bags” from Nordstrom were over $150, we put the kabosh on that idea.

She was still set on getting a “cute diaper bag” and began the new hunt. After a few weeks of searching, she found a whole line of diaper bags that were similar to the Petunia Picklebottoms with one huge difference: they were reasonably priced!

Because she couldn’t find the bags anywhere else, she went out on a limb and purchased 10 bags (that way, she could get a discount). With only 2 quick emails, sent to friends and family, her diaper bags became an instant hit!

Since then, she has made many orders and sold quite a few bags without much work. Everywhere she goes, women ask her about her bag. Friends and family are spreading the word which results in random phone calls from women all across the West.

Unfortunately for her, she is not the “salesy” type. She hates the feeling (or even the possibility) of being too forward so she just makes sales as people contact her. Fortunately for me, she is not the “salesy” type. If she was, she would then make me look bad because she would be making more than me! ;)

Coming soon = Mom Entrepreneurs 2

Too much to write, Too little time

Over the past 2 weeks, I have created 6 blog entry drafts on various topics. After interesting meetings, events, and articles; I am always motivated to write about the latest and greatest thing. Unfortunately, I begin the draft at an unconvenient moment and have to save it for a later day.

I really don’t know how some people do it. How do they write 2, 3, or 5 entries each day? Perhaps it could be that their blog plays a more important role in their job? Maybe they don’t have a family? Or maybe (just maybe), they are more organized with their time than I am!

Those of you that are avid bloggers, what is your trick? Do you allocate time each day to writing?

Comments fixed + new blog theme

Phew…

After soliciting the help of Trent Miskin, our CTO, my blog is back to normal.  I guess that there was a problem with my theme when we upgraded to the new Wordpress 2.0.  Anyway, it’s all fixed now and I have a new theme — if you are using a blog aggregator, come see what you think!

I’m confessing… I haven’t received a comment on my blog since April 21st! I guess that I just write really stupid entries. No one cares about what I have to say. My entries are not stimulating in any way. I’m wallowing in blog self-depression. :(

But wait…an email from the infamous Jordy Gunderson!

SUBJECT: Your blog hates me!

Brock, when I posted a comment on your blog it took me to a blank page. I’m not sure whether the comment was posted on or not, but you should look into it.

Jordan Gunderson
Blog ~ http://jordy.gundy.org

So…it might be true that nobody tried to comment on my website for a few months, but I’m going to take the liberty to believe that there must have been hundreds, maybe even thousands, of people that have been trying to comment on my blog but couldn’t! It makes me feel much better about my late night blogging habits.

Now, the question arises…how do I fix this dang thing? Anyone who is tech/wordpress savvy, please advise!

Also, for the thousands of you have been trying to comment, feel free to shoot me an email (bblake “AT” fundinguniverse.com) so that I can post your comments when it gets fixed. ;)

Shout out to Nicole Davis…

While this post is a few weeks late, I want to give a big shout out to Nicole Davis, the director of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year competition/event. I’ll tell you what, if you missed out on this year’s Gala, I’m very sorry! Everyone and their dog attended the black-tie event; I think that there were close to 1000 people there.

There are a few of the winner’s that I know personally and I would like to congratulate them:

  • Greg Warnock: Greg won the special “Supporter of Entrepreneurship” Award. Greg is a personal mentor of mine through the Junto Partners program. He is amazingly well-connected and has a sincere desire to promote entrepreneurship in the state.
  • Mark Burton: Mark is a personal friend that I have known since my youth. He is a member of my faith and was an inspiration to me growing up. He has built a very successful company and is an active angel investor.
  • Josh James & John Pestana: Josh & John are the Founders of Omniture — the most recent Utah company to go public. I have come to know Josh & Johnny P through my brother Dave (Director of Strategic Accounts at Omniture). They are both young entrepreneurs and are way cool.
  • Will West: I don’t know Will quite as well as I know the others, but he is a mentor to the Junto Partners. I have met with him in his office and he has provided valuable feedback to FundingUniverse.com. He has agreed to participate in a FundingUniverse.com podcast interview to provide valuable tips and suggestions on how to raise capital for your business. He has raised more capital than anyone in the state of Utah.

Nicole Davis: you deserve an “atta girl!” Nice work, my friend, on an amazing event.

Don’t Hate

A good friend of mine and previous Junto Partner, Tamio Stehrenberger, once created the “Don’t Hate” t-shirt brand. I always thought that the brand was cool because it’s in align with my “Be cool” theory.

Anyway…the reason that I bring this up is because a blogger in Texas posted an entry about FundingUniverse.com and me that was definitely “not cool.” Of course, everyone has their opinion… so it’s not that big of deal.

Although, if you are going to state your opinion, don’t you think that you should be educated on the subject? This guy doesn’t know me from Adam. He has no idea what we have accomplished or what we are building. He also doesn’t know how accurate the article in VentureWire was — it’s not my fault that the VW article posted that we raised “less than $1MM.”

Either way, I’m really glad that he made the entry because “any PR is good PR.” I wish him the best of luck and only give him one piece of advice: “Don’t Hate!”

UPDATE:  I read Mark Cuban’s blog this morning on criticism and I really like what he has to say.  If you don’t do anything, you’ll never be criticized.  If you are being criticized, it probably means that you are on the right track.  Take the criticism, learn from it, and keep going!

Utah Blog Conference vs Family

So I ended up missing out on last week’s Utah Blog Conference put on by my good friends Ryan Money and Phil Burns — and I was pretty bummed. I heard that it was a terrific event and there were about 150-200 people that ended up attending. I even heard a blurp about it on KSL Radio’s morning show the day after.

The reality is that evening events are very hard for me to attend. It’s hard for me to justify being away from my family at night when I am usually gone all day at work. Since I moved to Davis county, my commute requires me to leave very early in the morning and come home late at night. That only leaves a couple of hours to spend with my boy and a few more with my wife.

Anyway, I wished that I could’ve been to the conference (maybe next time they’ll do it over lunch :)) — congrats to Ryan, Phil, and everyone else who contributed to it’s success!
