Have you unlocked an iPhone 3g?

So…as you can tell by my last post, I’ve been looking into getting an iPhone.  The only problem with getting an iPhone is the requirement to switch to AT&T/Cingular.  I’ve been on T-Mobile for years and have been happy with the quality of service and the affordable rate plans (you can’t beat 1500 minutes for $39/month).

So… the question I know have is… have you (or anybody you know) unlocked an iPhone to use on the T-Mobile network?  If so, could you please tell me the risks of doing that?  Or even better… convince me why I shouldn’t?

Thanks for your help in advance!

I’m in the process of doing the same. (Assuming my ebay purchase is hassle free.) I purchased a phone that claimed to be unlocked and ready to go. There’s a great recent article by PC world here. http://tinyurl.com/8yea96
The Dev Team(official sounding name, unofficial group) released YellowSn0w, a software based unlocker, on New Year’s. The above article has links to the successful and unsuccessful results of users for the last 2 days…could be helpful for deciding.

My wife surprised me with an iPhone for Christmas, complete with contract. Sadly, AT&Ts coverage is horrendous on this side of Utah County, and I paid nearly $400 to get us out of our contract with them 6 months ago, so I returned it.

In all of my research I haven’t been dissuaded. So I’m going forward. I looked into the G1, T-mobile’s smartphone running Google’s ‘android’, it didn’t have the same energy for me. I think it was the lack of multi-touch ability. Something about it just didn’t fulfill my geekish desires. So I’m trying my luck with unlocking the iPhone.

    Good Luck!

    Brock,

If it helps, I couldn’t be more “in love” with a tech gadget than I am with the iPhone 3G! It’s possibilities are endless, and I highly doubt that you’d be disappointed. Although, I apologize that I can’t provide you with any input on the “unlocking” question that you have.

I whole-heartedly agree with you that T-Mobile’s plans are certainly better.

    Cheers,
    Deavon

    Brock,

I have a great friend that owns 7 t-mobile stores and he love the iphone. They unlock them all the time and they work perfectly. He said that you can also use the internet for something like $5 a month. I don’t know if that’s still the case though. I also have friends that have unlocked phones and they have no complaints. I think the only thing is if you happen to get a new one, once you unlock it you actually void the warranty. That’s what I know. I will be getting one soon and if you haven’t gotten one yet maybe we can score a deal for buying two.

Also,I talked with you when you came to Logan for the pitch contest about a possible franchise funding website. I tried to email you but haven’t heard back. Is this something you would be open to talk about sometime. Thanks. Brandon

I was just thinking of getting the G1 when I read your post! I have also been wondering about the iPhone and didn’t want to give up TMobile because of their unbeatable rates. Thanks for the post.

    Hi Brock,
I did have a hacked iphone with Tmobile. I loved Tmobile and it was a little dicey watching my husband cut my sim card with a knife. It worked well…for awhile. One day my phone just died. I lost everything. Not good. I quickly switched to At&T and got the new iphone. My husband still loves his hacked version and even has apps that I can’t get on the iphone.
